Danny Ward seems wasted in Liverpool’s under-23 team.

Liverpool back-up Danny Ward put in a superb performance for the under-23s last night against Porto.

Ward is Liverpool’s third choice goalkeeper behind Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius, but it is fair to wonder why he has not had more of a look in.

Ward, 24, was playing for the under-23s as an overage player in their Premier League International Cup tie with Porto.

Liverpool led through a goal from Matty Virtue but two goals from an impressive Porto side led them to a 2-1 victory.

This came despite a lively performance from Ward in goal, who showed that he was a step above playing at under-23 level.

He kept the Reds in the tie despite some shaky defending, and deserves the plaudits which come his way.

Ward is better than playing under-23 football, he showed this when he played a starring role helping Huddersfield win promotion to the Premier League last season.

A Wales international, it as confusing that no side have come in for his services as it is that Liverpool have not given him a proper chance

It’s unlikely at this critical stage of the season that he will get an opportunity in Liverpool’s first team, but he did himself no disservice last night with his performance.
