The Reds academy prodigy scored a brace for the U23s just hours before Jurgen Klopp’s side left it late to claim a 1-1 Premier League draw.
A number of Liverpool fans have been commenting on Twitter about Rhian Brewster’s display for the Reds Under-23s in their Premier League 2 clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers Under-23s on Sunday.
The 19-year-old would have got off the mark on four minutes in Kirkby were he not he was judged to have impeded the goalkeeper as he did so.
However, Brewster did eventually break the deadlock on 19 minutes when he swept into the top corner of the net following good work from Curtis Jones and Elijah Dixon-Bonner.
Benny Ashley-Seal then levelled for Wolves, only for Herbie Kane to put Liverpool back in front, and then came Brewster’s second, Luis Longstaff’s cross being headed home by the Reds prodigy.
A deflected Leighton Clarkson header gave Liverpool a three-goal advantage and a frantic finish followed as Ashley-Seal made it 4-2 and Boubacar Hanne then netted in the 89th minute to set up a dramatic finale.
With Liverpool’s first team in action against Manchester United on Sunday and leaving it late to claim a 1-1 draw, quite a few Anfield faithful were wondering why the teenage prodigy didn’t make the squad.
Asked by the Liverpool Echo if Brewster was taking steps in the right direction, U23s manager Neil Critchley said: “There were positives to take from the game and Rhian’s goals were among them.
“He is looking slightly better every time he plays. That was arguably his best game for us this season, not just his goals but his all-round contribution, the way he led the line particularly without the ball, competing with his back to goal as well.”
