Liverpool appear to have put a block on Barcelona signing more of their players.
Liverpool’s deal to sell Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona in January was a tough one for fans to take, but it seems that the club were keen to prevent a similar situation in the future.
The Reds saw Barcelona make a host of moves to sign Coutinho in the summer of 2017, but they stood firm, forcing the Brazilian playmaker to play out the first half of last season with the Reds.
Barca didn’t give up though, and came back for the midfielder during the January transfer window, eventually tempting Liverpool into a huge £146million deal, as reported by Sky Sports.
Coutinho has joined another ex-Liverpool star at the Camp Nou in Luis Suarez, and amid concerns that Barca may end up returning to Anfield for the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah or Roberto Firmino, Liverpool have made a cunning move.
According to The Telegraph, Liverpool have inserted a clause into Coutinho’s deal which means that, should Barcelona want a Reds star between now and 2020, they must pay an £89million premium on Liverpool’s valuation.
Sporting director Michael Edwards is the man who put the clause into the deal, adding another smart move to his record after many shrewd moves to make Liverpool the team they are today.
Now, Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter to hail Edwards, calling him a ‘genius’ and the ‘best sporting director of all time’ after hearing about the clause, even adding that he should be in charge of Brexit negotiations and is the best thing to happen to the club.
