Liverpool coasted to a big win on Sunday, beating Leeds United 3-0 at Elland Road as Joel Matip produced a superb performance.

The Reds were 1-0 up at the break thanks to Mohamed Salah’s goal, tapping home a Trent Alexander-Arnold cross.

Fabinho made it 2-0 after the break, and Sadio Mane capped off a frustrating day personally by finally scoring.

The day was somewhat marred by Harvey Elliott’s injury, and whilst Liverpool will love the three points, they will just want the best for their teenage star.

Matip overshadows Van Dijk

When you talk about Liverpool central defenders, the attention of course goes to Van Dijk. The Dutchman is one of the best centre backs in the world, and his return has been a huge boost for Liverpool.

Yet right next to him is Joel Matip, who excelled against Leeds on Sunday.

Matip made a marauding run forward to set up the opening goal, looking more like a number 10 than a centre back.

The Cameroonian was able to bring the ball out from the back throughout, combining his defensive prowess with confidence on the ball.

Liverpool fans praise Matip

Liverpool fans took to Twitter to hail Matip, with his performance causing some to apologise to him.

There were sections of the Liverpool fanbase who wanted Matip sold, and they now admit they got it wrong.

Some called Matip ‘immense’ and ‘absolute class’, feeling that he is underrated away from Anfield…
