Liverpool fans on Twitter could not believe what they were seeing as former players Michael Owen and Jason McAteer clashed during a Star Sixes tournament.

The duo were representing their respective countries, England and the Republic of Ireland during a six-a-side legends tournament in Glasgow, broadcast on Sky Sports when they were involved in a heated clash.

During the match, both players went for the ball as McAteer pulled back the striker with Owen retaliating by kicking back at the midfielder, who then kicked back.

Despite both players lashing out at one another, the referee opted to send McAteer off, with Owen remaining on the field of play as England legends progressed through to the final.

England would go onto to beat the Rest of the World in the final but it was the incident between McAteer and Owen that got everyone talking.

None more so than Liverpool supporters on Twitter, with one fan questioning whether there was any prior problems between Owen and McAteer when they were Anfield teammates.

If there was one player the Liverpool fans were backing then it was McAteer because Owen has become unpopular with the fanbase of his former club after he played for Manchester United towards the back end of his career.
