Manchester City beat Everton on Wednesday night to leapfrog Liverpool at the top of the Premier League table.

Liverpool fans on Twitter have let rip at Everton supporters after Marco Silva’s side were beaten by Manchester City 2-0 on Wednesday night in the Premier League [BBC Sport].

That result meant that Pep Guardiola’s side, who have played a game more, have now leapfrogged the Reds to the top spot in what is set to be a closely-fought title challenge.

Defender Aymeric Laporte put his side ahead just on the break when he headed in David Silva’s cross from a set-piece situation before Gabriel Jesus made sure all the points were wrapped up in stoppage time.

While there is a long way to go in determining who will be crowned champions of England, a defeat for City at Goodison Park would have been helpful to Liverpool’s cause.

But their Merseyside rivals were unable to give them the helping hand as some Reds supporters hit out at their neighbours for allegedly celebrating City’s win in the stands.

However, earlier on Thursday, after all the social media talk, the Liverpool Echo shared the truth behind the photos of Everton allegedly ‘celebrating the Manchester City goal’ – they state it is from the Toffees win against Brighton.

Prior to the match, there was a lot of talk from the Goodison Park faithful as to whether they wanted their team to pick up points against the Manchester club, which then help the cause of their near neighbours.

One fan labelled the Toffees as ‘utterly embarrassing’ and another ‘a disgrace to football’ as Liverpool will now be looking to reclaim top spot in the table.

Jurgen Klopp’s side will be preparing for a home clash against the free-flowing Bournemouth at the weekend as they look to take charge of the title race once more.

A point is enough for them to leapfrog City, who have now played a game more, they will take on Maurizio Sarri’s Chelsea at the Etihad on Sunday afternoon.
