Should Liverpool have moved for Tottenham’s Davinson Sanchez?

Tottenham Hotspur committed a record fee to sign Davinson Sanchez last month and the Colombian appears to be a smart addition already.

He came through a tricky test up against the awkward Andy Carroll at the weekend, and has adapted instantly to English football.

Former Liverpool midfielder Jan Molby hit out earlier this month, telling the Liverpool Echo that Liverpool should have signed him – and believed he would have snubbed Tottenham had they registered an interest.

While that is debatable, Sanchez would have surely strengthened a defence which has been and continues to be their weak link.

Manager Jurgen Klopp speaks to the media during the Liverpool FC Press Conference at Anfield on August 22, 2017 in Liverpool, England.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was quizzed about Sanchez and Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly last week but was dismissive, commenting: “No. We watched all of them 500 million times,” the Liverpool Echo reported.

The Reds were determined to sign Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk but even as early as June it appeared this was unlikely.

Liverpool’s decision not to bring in another defender looks costly and even negligent based on the opening few games of the season.

Sanchez would have been a smart addition, and even been substantially cheaper than the fee they would have needed to spend on Virgil van Dijk.

As it is they spent £35 million on a player they did not need in Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

Liverpool fans were frustrated at the weekend watching Sanchez star for Tottenham, commenting on Twitter to express their regret.
