A number of Liverpool fans have insisted that Xherdan Shaqiri now needs to be given the chance to start for Jurgen Klopp’s side after an emphatic reminder of his quality came during Switzerland’s Nations League clash with Iceland on Saturday.

Shaqiri was superb as the Swiss ran out 6-0 winners against an Icelandic side that included Everton’s Gylfi Sigurdsson. The former Stoke man scored a sumptuous free-kick and also provided two assists in the dominant win.

The free-kick saw Shaqiri find the top corner from an incredibly tight angle at the edge of the box, while some of his other set-pieces led to a couple of the goals and caused the visitors all sorts of problems throughout the game.

The win will leave Switzerland with plenty of confidence heading into Tuesday’s clash with England, and has left a number of Liverpool fans lauding Shaqiri on social media.

The 26-year-old has not been able to make a fast start to life at Anfield. He has made just two substitute appearances in the Premier League thus far, proving to be on the pitch for less than half an hour in total.

But after his latest international display, several Liverpool fans want to see Shaqiri given a chance to start – which is an enormous vote of confidence given the quality that he is battling with right now – and some have even suggested that that start should come against Tottenham in their first game back following the break.
