Liverpool fans have joked that Leeds United may be interested in their upcoming under-23 clash.

A number of Liverpool fans could not resist making light of the ‘Spygate’ saga involving Leeds United after it was confirmed that supporters would be allowed into Derby’s training ground to watch Friday’s under-23 clash.

The most bizarre sub-plot of the season came about when it emerged that a member of staff from Leeds had been spotted watching Derby’s training ground ahead of the two sides’ meeting in the Championship back in January.

The staff member was not arrested and there was no official suggestion that he did anything more than watch the Rams work from a public footpath outside the training ground (via Yorkshire Evening Post).

The Yorkshire Evening Post added that there was nothing in place to suggest that Leeds had actually broken a rule, but the Championship high-flyers were still handed a £200,000 fine by the EFL after an investigation that was almost farcical at times and dragged on for several weeks.

Leeds fans would be delighted never to hear the term ‘Spygate’ again. Some pundits made bizarre suggestions about the punishment that the Whites should face, and it left some questionable characters in English football remarkably believing that they could take a moral high ground.

But it is not difficult to see why some Liverpool supporters felt compelled to joke about the saga when Liverpool Echo reported James Pearce confirmed on Twitter that Derby’s training ground would be open for fans on Friday when the two clubs play each other in an under-23 game.
