Liverpool fans are unimpressed with reported linking them to Southampton’s Alex McCarthy.
McCarthy would be the cheap option for the Reds compared to Roma’s Alisson or Atletico Madrid’s Jan Oblak, although they know that Southampton would not let him go easily.
Liverpool have been criticised by fans and pundits alike for repeatedly targeting Southampton players but they have had big success with regards to Sadio Mane and Virgil van Dijk.
McCarthy is an interesting option as he is an underrated goalkeeper who has had to bide his time for shot in the big time after first impressing with Reading in 2012 in the top flight.
His form for the Royals even saw him called into the England squad but his career faltered since, before he displaced Fraser Forster as Southampton’s number one this past season.
The 28-year-old’s best years are ahead of him and he could be a smart signing for Liverpool, but fans would rather sign a bigger name for their most problematic position.
