Should Liverpool make long term plans to sign Marco Reus?
For years Liverpool supporters have been fascinated by the prospect of signing Marco Reus.
Many of these messages are ironic at this point, but new comments from the player himself threaten to give the long standing rumours legs for two more years.
The Borussia Dortmund winger has been at the club since joining from Borussia Moenchengladbach in 2012, and has resisted multiple offers to move on.
He said: “There are four or five international clubs who interest me. On May 31, 2019, I will turn 30. That would be my last big contract and a final opportunity to try something different.”
It is easy to believe that Liverpool, with his former manager Jurgen Klopp in charge, are one of the clubs Reus would consider.
There are concerns of course. Reus has suffered badly with injuries in recent seasons and is currently sidelined with a knee injury.
With speed one of Reus’ major assets, his game could be on the downturn when he hits 30, so there is no guarantee he will then be the player he once was.
But on a free transfer he would absolutely be worth the risk, and Liverpool fans would flock to buy his shirts in their droves.
The Reds are of course not short of attackers, but by 2019 Coutinho may finally have jumped ship, and reinforcements will be needed.
If Liverpool really want to think forward, next summer they could try to find an agreement a year early with Reus as they have with Naby Keita, who joins next summer.
