AS claim Liverpool have made an offer to sign Atletico Madrid forward Matheus Cunha – but it has been rejected. Liverpool fans have responded, and are clearly keen to see their side go back in with a second bid.
Just last summer, Atleti paid £22million (GOAL) to sign Cunha from Hertha Berlin. It came after the Brazil star had a hand in 23 goals during 40 games for the Bundesliga side – but he has so far failed to replicate that.
Indeed, he has only scored five in 23 for Diego Simeone’s men – though the La Liga side are renowned for their defensive style of play. Liverpool are said to have made an offer, late on in the January window for Cunha.
An ‘official proposal’ was made, but rejected by Simeone and Atleti. However, the report does state that the temptation of Liverpool and the lure of replacing Roberto Firmino is likely to play on Cunha’s mind.
The Reds could revisit a move in the summer with Firmino’s contract due to expire in June 2023. Of course, the Reds are currently focusing on a deal to sign Porto superstar Luis Diaz – and are unlikely to add any others.
What do Liverpool fans think of a potential move for Cunha?
A striker with the capability of playing as a false nine – the creativity of a 10, but the power of a 9 – Cunha is seen as very similar to that of Firmino. He is also more than adept at playing out wide, which Jurgen Klopp will like.
It is unclear how much Cunha would cost the Reds, given Atleti will want to make a tidy profit on a player they got relatively cheap, at just £22million. Liverpool fans have had their say on Twitter and many want him signed.
