Newcastle have reportedly opened talks and asked Liverpool about signing Nat Phillips. It is believed that the Toon would have to pay between £10million and £15million to sign Phillips – and Liverpool fans have reacted.
Phillips, 24, has fallen down the pecking order at Liverpool after a brilliant breakthrough spell last season. Injuries to Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez saw the defender become crucial to Liverpool’s top-four hunt.
But this season, van Dijk, Gomez and Matip are back – while Liverpool have also signed Ibrahima Konate. It means Phillips is fifth choice. The Mail claim Newcastle are looking to take advantage, and have opened talks.
They have asked Liverpool about a move and it is believed a fee between £10million and £15million is expected to be enough for Liverpool. The Toon are desperate to bring in a centre-back, or even two in that position.
Diego Carlos of Sevilla remains the main target – while the likes of Burnley’s James Tarkowski has also been linked. It is believed Phillips is the latest centre-back Newcastle have targeted and a deal looks possible.
Newcastle ask Liverpool for Phillips: Reds fans react on Twitter
It seems to be a move that suits all parties. Liverpool are willing to let Phillips go, the player himself is said to be keen on a move and Newcastle are desperate for a centre-back. He is also proven in the Premier League.
A fighter, a no-nonsense defender, seemingly perfect to fight for a side in the midst of a relegation battle. Liverpool fans have reacted on Twitter to reports to sign Phillips, and many think it would be a good move for him.
