It’s not often you can say that a player is a case of unfulfilled potential after scoring a World Cup-winning goal, but that’s the situation with Mario Gotze.

Gotze burst onto the scene with Borussia Dortmund, having first joined the club way back in 2001. With 31 goals in 116 games, Gotze was billed as football’s next big thing.

In 2013, Gotze earned his big move. Bayern Munich secured his signature in a controversial move, paying his release clause as they raided their big rivals.

Just a year later, Gotze won the World Cup with an extra time winner against Argentina. It looked like nothing ccould stop Gotze, but he just hasn’t kicked on.

Form and fitness have eluded Gotze in recent times, and Bayern sold him back to Dortmund in 2016 as he made an attempt to kickstart his career.

It hasn’t happened though, and with Gotze’s contract ending this summer, Dortmund have decided to let Gotze leave the club for a second time.

Gotze turns 28 this summer, meaning there could still be something left in the tank. He’s technically-gifted and versatile, but he needs to put in the work in order to get back to his best.

Liverpool fans have been taking to Twitter in order to discuss Gotze’s availability, as Jurgen Klopp got the best out of him at Dortmund and once wanted him at Anfield.

Some feel that Gotze makes perfect sense as a replacement for fellow free agent Adam Lallana. Some think a move is a ‘no-brainer’, believing Klopp can resurrect Gotze’s career.

Others believe that Gotze is already past it, and would prefer to see Curtis Jones take Lallana’s minutes rather than sign the German.
