At last, the news that virtually every Liverpool fan had been waiting for has finally been delivered.

For months, Reds supporters have been eagerly awaiting news – or at least some progress – regarding Sadio Mane extending his tenure at Anfield.

The Senegal international has been sensational since swapping Southampton for Liverpool in 2016, becoming a crucial component in one of Europe’s most feared attacking trios.

Mane scored 20 times last season and already has seven goals so far this campaign, complementing front line teammates Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah perfectly.

This year, Firmino and Salah signed contract extensions tying them to Jurgen Klopp’s side until 2023, leaving fans to wonder when Mane – whose previous deal ran until 2021 – would follow suit.

On Thursday evening, the Reds finally confirmed via their official website that the 26-year-old has agreed a new long-term contract, putting an end to speculation over his future on Merseyside.

“I am very happy, very happy to extend my time at Liverpool,” said Mane. “It is a great day for me and now I am looking forward to everything – to helping the team, to helping the club achieve our dreams and, especially, to win trophies.

“I’ve always said, when I knew I had a chance to come here I didn’t have to think twice. The right club in the right moment and with the right coach as well. I came here and was very happy. For me, I have made the best decision in my career.”

Although Liverpool have not disclosed the length of Mane’s new contract, multiple media outlets including BBC Sport and Sky Sports News have suggested that he will be tied to the club until 2023, while The Independent claims that Mane will officially put pen to paper before the end of the year.

The Premier League club has delivered the news on its social media pages with much fanfare and many supporters could not contain their glee:

Mane has scored 40 times in 89 appearances for Liverpool, including a goal in May’s Champions League final against Real Madrid.
