Liverpool star Sadio Mane cried at the end of Senegal’s win over Equatorial Guinea – after being seemingly booed by his own fans.
Sadio Mane is undoubtedly a loved player at Liverpool.
Since arriving at Anfield from Southampton in 2016, the winger has claimed 40 goals and 18 assists in just 89 appearances. However, Mane’s relationship with fans of Senegal, his national team, appears to be a little more frayed.
The 26-year-old played the full 90 minutes for his country as they ran out 1-0 winners in Saturday’s Africa Cup of National qualifier against Equatorial Guinea.
However, Mane was seemingly booed by his own supporters after missing a great chance to double Senegal’s lead in the second half, despite the nation having already reached the finals of the tournament.
At full time, the Liverpool star appeared to be holding back tears, and eventually pulled his shirt over his face and fell to the ground.
Mane’s teammates quickly arrived to console him and left the field alongside the still visibly upset player.
A number of Liverpool fans took to Twitter to express their dismay with Senegal’s supporters for appearing to boo Mane and to console him following his on-pitch tears:
Mane, who is on the five-man shortlist for the 2018 BBC African Footballer of the Year award alongside Liverpool teammate Mohamed Salah, will now return to Melwood as club football resumes ahead of next Saturday’s Premier League trip to Watford.
