This time two years ago, Liverpool fans were calling for Divock Origi to be sold amid interest from Wolverhampton Wanderers.
You could understand why they wanted Origi gone at the time, he hadn’t really forced himself into the Reds’ first team and he’d spent the prior season out on loan in Germany.
However, in the following months, Origi would cement himself as one of the most important players in the Reds’ modern history, and that’s not an exaggeration.
Nobody can argue that the Belgian is one of Liverpool’s best players because that simply isn’t true.
However, in terms of how important his impact has been, very few players in the club’s history can match Origi in terms of stepping up in big moments.
The striker scored three of the most important goals Liverpool have ever scored, netting a brace in that famous 4-0 win against Barcelona at Anfield, including the eventual winner from Trent Alexander-Arnold’s quick corner.
He also made an impact in the final against Spurs, bagging late on to make it 2-0 and sealing a European triumph for the Reds.
If he had been sold to Wolves, Liverpool would likely have missed out on their sixth Champions League in 2019, and the Reds are so lucky that Origi was there for them during that run.
Imagine if they’d have sold him to Wolves two years ago. They never would have won that trophy and the 2018/19 season would have been incredibly deflating, missing out on both the Premier League and Champions League within weeks of one another.
It’s not a huge stretch to say that Liverpool may not have recovered from that disappointment and it may have affected their charge to the Premier League title last season.
Nobody could have predicted that Origi would become such a vital player for such a historic Champions League run, but it’s fair to say that Liverpool fans should consider themselves lucky that he wasn’t sold to Wolves two years ago.
