Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge appears to be heading towards a January exit, with reports suggesting he is keen to move on.

It has become clear that Dominic Solanke has overtaken Sturridge in the pecking order, despite being unproven at first team level.

Solanke was selected to start the Merseyside derby against Everton… while Sturridge did not even make the bench, which The Mail attributed to a ‘slight’ hamstring injury.

But a fortnight earlier Solanke was also selected to start, and it is clear Jurgen Klopp has big plans for him.

This Solanke over Sturridge preference was even evident at international level, and the lack of chances being given to Sturridge makes it evident he will have to move on if he wants a World Cup place.

This all seems understandable on Sturridge’s part, but it doesn’t escape the question over whether Liverpool are actually making a mistake right now.

There may be a case that Solanke has more of a long term future at Anfield, but right now Sturridge is the better player, a proven scorer in an international tournament for country, and a Europa League final for his club.

Surely the Reds would have stood a better chance of beating Everton at the weekend with Sturridge in the side than Solanke?

Liverpool fans are worried Jurgen Klopp is making a mistake by preparing to discard the once prolific striker, and part of the worry is that they do not have an adequate replacement, with Solanke not yet proving himself.
