Liverpool defender Andy Robertson has defied expectation this season by going from relegation with Hull City last season to the Champions League final, and Liverpool fans have expressed their delight at his efforts on Twitter.

The 24-year-old starred on the left side of defence as Liverpool booked their place in the Champions League final against Real Madrid, which will be played on March 26 in Kiev.

Liverpool took a 5-2 lead to Rome ahead of Wednesday night’s second leg, and took the lead twice in the first half through Sadio Mane and Gini Wijnaldum only to be pegged back on both occasions.

James Milner scored a calamitous own goal before Edin Dzeko got his name on the score sheet. Two late goals from Radja Nainggolan saw Roma reduce the deficit to just one goal, but Liverpool held on to win 7-6 on aggregate.

Robertson, who is in his first full season of Champions League football, has been crucial in the Reds’ knockout stages with sublime performances against Porto, Manchester City and Roma.

He had been second best to the likes of Alberto Moreno and makeshift left-back Milner during the first half of the season, but the 21-time Scotland international has turned it around to shine on Liverpool’s left flank.

Reds fans reacted to his performance on Twitter, with one fan praising Liverpool by posting “what a buy” after the club lured him to Anfield from Hull last summer for an initial £8million – as reported by BBC Sport last July.
