Fabio Carvalho could play at the World Cup after the Liverpool talent was named in Portugal’s preliminary squad for the tip to Qatar.

Liverpool snapped up Carvalho this past summer having missed out on a late January deal.

Carvalho impressed for Fulham last season and has already shown promise in the early weeks of his Liverpool career.

The young playmaker started against Nottingham Forest over the weekend and may well be be needed regularly with Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota now injured.

Fabio Carvalho could play at the World Cup

Carvalho is yet to nail down that regular Liverpool starting spot but he could yet feature at the World Cup.

That may sound ridiculous but Portugal boss Fernando Santos appears to have taken a liking to Carvalho.

Portugal have submitted their provisional squad for the World Cup and Carvalho is in there, as reported by Mais Futebol.

Carvalho, 20, was born in Portugal and raised in London, meaning he could have played for England too.

After turning for England Under-16, England’s Under-17’s and Under-18’s, Carvalho switched to Portugal Under-21’s earlier this year.

Carvalho now has a chance – even if it’s a long shot – to make the squad for Portugal as they head to Qatar next month.

Carvalho has immense competition for attacking midfield or wide roles.

Otavio, Vitinha, Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva and Fabio Vieira are all included as creative midfield players.

Out wide, Portugal have also called up Goncalo Guedes, Ricardo Horta, Francisco Trincao, Jota, Pedro Goncalves, Daniel Podence and Rafael Leao.

That competition is pretty daunting and it’s hard to see Carvalho breaking through all of them to nail down a spot in the final 26-man squad.

Portugal do have a friendly against Nigeria on November 17th, but their final squad is due just four days earlier.

That means Carvalho may not land his first senior call-up just yet but that he is even included is another sign that Liverpool have got a real wonderkid on their hands.
