El Hadji Diouf has praised Ismaila Sarr as a ‘world class’ talent – and believes that he could slot into the Liverpool side perfectly.

England take on Senegal at the World Cup this evening with a spot in the quarter-finals up for grabs.

The Three Lions will be heavy favourites, especially with Senegal’s star man Sadio Mane out of the World Cup through injury.

Yet Senegal are in the knockout stages for a reason and will have a number of players on show who can hurt England.

One of them will be winger Sarr.

The Watford star has been highly rated for years and it’s honestly a surprise that he is still with the Hornets.

Signed from Rennes back in 2019, Sarr has shown his quality in English football both in the Premier League and in the Championship.

Sarr is now a key man for Senegal and scored a key penalty against Ecuador in their last group stage games, having won the spot kick in the first place.

Sarr is fast and rangy, capable of causing real problems down flanks or through the middle.

England will be very wary of Sarr and Senegal will be looking for him and many other players to channel their 2002 predecessors.

The 2002 Senegal side dazzled at the World Cup in Japan and South Korea, reaching the quarter-finals.

The likes of Lamine Diatta, Ferdinand Coly, Salif Diao, Papa Bouba Diop, Henri Camara and Aliou Cisse – the current Senegal manager – ended up earning moves to the Premier League.

Then there’s El Hadji Diouf, who was the shining light of the Senegal 2002 side but failed to live up to the hype at Liverpool.

Diouf went on to carve out a decent career in English football and has now had his say on Sarr.

Diouf has told the Daily Mail that he truly believes that Sarr is a ‘world class’ player – and could easily slot into the Liverpool or Manchester United teams.

“He is a world-class player,” said Diouf. “He can play for Manchester United and Liverpool, anywhere,” he added.

Liverpool may still fancy moving for another winger in 2023 and they may well keep close tabs on Sarr, no doubt hoping that he wouldn’t be another Diouf.
