Liverpool have more players than Everton in our Combined Merseyside XI.

Goalkeeper
Jordan Pickford has made mistakes this season, but the Everton goalkeeper’s overall performance has been very encouraging. The England international is certainly better and has more potential than Liverpool duo Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius.
Defence
Andrew Robertson has had to work hard to establish himself in the Liverpool first team, but there is no doubt now that the Scotland international is the best left-back at Anfield.
Joe Gomez has been superb at right-back for Liverpool and has improved as the season has progressed. The 20-year-old England international has shown his potential and can only get better under manager Jurgen Klopp.
Virgil van Dijk did not have a great first half of the season when he was at Southampton, but his since his switch to Liverpool in the summer transfer window, the Netherlands international centre-back seems to be back on form.
Phil Jagielka also forms part of out Combined Merseyside XI, but that is mainly due to other centre-backs from either not playing brilliantly.

Midfield
Wayne Rooney has shown his versatility this season by playing as an attacking midfielder and in a holding role.
The Manchester United legend has scored 10 goals and provided two assists in 22 Premier League starts for Everton so far this season.
Idrissa Gueye has played well for Everton as well, and is one of the best defensive midfielders in the Premier League.
Jordan Henderson may have his critics, but the fact that the England international midfielder has made 19 starts in the league for the Reds so far this season underlines his importance to the team.

Attack
Mohamed Salah has been Liverpool’s best player this season, and many will argue that the Egypt international has been the best in the Premier League this campaign.
Salah’s Liverpool’s teammate Roberto Firmino does not always hit the headlines, but the Brazil international’s importance cannot be undermined.
The 26-year-old, who can operate as a forward or as a winger, has scored 14 goals and provided seven assists in 27 Premier League starts for the Reds.
Sadio Mane’s heroics this season have been overshadowed by Salah, but the fact is that the 25-year-old has scored eight goals and provided seven assists in 22 league starts for the Reds.
