Liverpool have been tipped by the bookmakers to sign the Tottenham Hotspur player if he leaves North London but the Reds have another option.

Following a report from the Sun claiming Tottenham Hotspur and Harry Kane have reached an impasse in contract negotiations, bookmakers Ladbrokes made Liverpool the 5/2 favourites to sign the England striker if he left White Hart Lane.

The odds prompted plenty of discussion among fans of both clubs and one Reds supporter made the interesting claim that Liverpool did not need Kane because they had Divock Origi.

Given the players’ contrasting goal tallies to date, the claim may seem bizarre, yet those who have watched the Belgian international develop over the years may feel there is not as much in it as first thought.

At 21, Origi is two years Kane’s junior and he is yet to hit the heights of the Tottenham man.

However, despite his limited chances Origi does already have 12 goals in 44 appearances for the Reds, and when you consider the vast majority of those have been from the bench it is a fine return.

When Origi starts he has a habit of scoring; the only problem is the strength in depth at Anfield means those chances are few and far between.

But as he gets older, Liverpool fans can expect to see a lot more of the Belgian in the starting line-up, and with manager Jurgen Klopp already looking like getting the best out of the player the future seems very bright.

For now Liverpool seem intent on playing a free-flowing front-three rather than an out-and-out striker. But even if Kane did become available – and it is highly unlikely – they should instead focus all their attention on turning Origi into the player he has the potential to become.
