Jamie Redknapp claimed that Liverpool ‘got lucky’ during their 3-1 win against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park, as he told Super Sunday on Sky Sports.

In the first half, Liverpool raced into a 2-0 lead, and in truth, it could have been a lot more.

But Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s goal was the controversial one because there were cries that Roberto Firmino was offside in the build-up to the goal.

As Andy Robertson whipped in a ball from the left channel, Firmino went for the header, from an offside position, missed the ball, before it landed at Oxlade-Chamberlain’s feet and he powered home.

But, in the Sky studios, Redknapp thinks Firmino impacted play and the goal should have been ruled offside.

“He is offside,” said Redknapp. “The reason why is because the fullback has to come, tuck in and pick him up.

“So, Liverpool do get lucky. None of the Palace players complain. But you can see that Tyrick Mitchell has to mark him because he knows he’s the closest man, which all fullbacks have to do.

“He goes for the ball. And he definitely makes Tyrick Mitchell’s positional change. He definitely impacts the play.”

Whilst many thought that offside goal was going to be the talking point, well Liverpool’s late second-half penalty was perhaps a bigger one.

Palace goalkeeper, Vicente Guaita, was seemingly punished for a foul on Diogo Jota inside the penalty area.

Although it looked soft, the penalty was awarded and Fabinho, in the absence of Mo Salah, converted from the spot to seal the game for his side.

There’s no doubt that Liverpool were the better team in the first half, but there will be anger that at least two of their goals were very questionable.
