Diogo Jota impressed for Portugal as the Liverpool striker started in a 1-0 defeat to Spain on Tuesday evening.

Portugal are gearing up for the World Cup, where they will take on Ghana, South Korea and Uruguay.

Some will back Portugal for a deep run in the competition but Tuesday was a difficult night for Fernando Santos and co.

Alvaro Morata’s late goal won it for Spain, handing them a 1-0 victory in Braga.

Diogo Jota impressed for Portugal

Cristiano Ronaldo was left frustrated and was actually overshadowed by the performance of Liverpool ace Diogo Jota.

Jota featured on the left flank for Portugal with Bernardo Silva on the right, whilst Bruno Fernandes was the number 10 behind Ronaldo.

We’re more used to seeing Jota as a striker for Liverpool but Santos decided to utilise him in from the left flank.

That’s a position we rarely see Jota play these days, especially given Luis Diaz’s impact at Liverpool.

There was no goal for Jota but his performance attracted praise over in Portugal.

Newspaper Record picked out Jota as the best player in a Portugal shirt last night.

They praised Jota’s defensive work rate as well as his ability to drive at the Spain defence and link up with teammates in the final third.

This is perfect for Jota, who really needs minutes right now.

The Liverpool star had a delayed start to the season due to injury and has been working his way back to fitness of late.

After starting against Ajax, Jota has now gone on international duty and seemingly impressed with Portugal.

That’s perfect for Liverpool, who really need to kickstart their Premier League season against Brighton and Hove Albion this weekend.

Jota was substituted due to fatigue but it would be no surprise to see him start against the Seagulls having found some promising form on international duty.
