Diogo Jota is injured and that means Darwin Nunez may now need to play as more of a winger as Liverpool reshuffle their attack.

The Reds secured a big win on Sunday by beating rivals Manchester City 1-0 at Anfield.

Mohamed Salah’s fine goal grabbed all three points for Liverpool even in the face of a host of injuries.

Joel Matip, Ibrahima Konate, Luis Diaz, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain were all on the sidelines against City.

Trent Alexander-Arnold made his return off the bench but just as one player comes back, another goes away in Jota.

Diogo Jota is injured – could Darwin Nunez step up?

Portuguese attacker Jota suffered a big injury in the second half and has now sadly been ruled out of the World Cup.

Jurgen Klopp claims Jota will be out for a long time and that’s the last thing Liverpool needed to hear.

Diaz is already out and losing the backup option on the left flank is just a nightmare.

Fabio Carvalho and Harvey Elliott are a couple of options on the left side but what if Klopp looks towards Darwin Nunez?

We all know Nunez as a centre forward but the Uruguayan has actually played as a left winger before.

It’s not many appearances mind you; Nunez played as a left winger five times in 85 outings for Benfica, according to Transfermarkt.

Yet 10 goals and two assists in those five games is a remarkable record, with two hat-tricks included in that run.

Nunez came on to play that role against City and caused absolute mayhem.

Nunez was a threat on the counter, using his pace and physicality to cause chaos against tired City legs.

Had Nunez picked his head up to find Mohamed Salah, Liverpool would likely have been 2-0 up and Nunez even created a chance for Trent Alexander-Arnold too.

There were signs there that full backs would hate to play against Nunez, but more would be expected of him on the ball if he is to play this role moving forward, rather than just being a counter-attacking option.

Klopp is running out of options in the final third but with Mohamed Salah shining as a striker against Manchester City and Roberto Firmino right at home as a number 10, the door may be open for Nunez to play down the left.

It’s a small sample size of success for him there historically but it’s something Klopp may well fancy experimenting with a little more.
