Liverpool wanted Denis Zakaria and the midfielder may already face a battle for his Chelsea future just weeks after joining from Juventus.
The Reds were in the market for a midfielder on deadline day with a temporary solution needed for the problems in Jurgen Klopp’s engine room.
Liverpool seem focused on chasing Jude Bellingham next summer so a loan signing to tide the Reds over until 2023 was the focus.
Arthur Melo ended up arriving from Juventus but he will now be out until 2023 having already picked up a serious injury.
Liverpool did though look into signing another Juventus midfielder only to end up missing out.

Liverpool wanted Denis Zakaria
Sky Italia’s Gianluca Di Marzio reported that Liverpool asked about signing Denis Zakaria but ended up signing Arthur instead.
It’s unclear why that move fell through but Zakaria did tell Blick in his native Switzerland that he heard Liverpool wanted him.
Arthur’s move hasn’t gone to plan and Zakaria is in a similar boat.
Zakaria has yet to make a single appearance for Chelsea more than a month since arriving at Stamford Bridge.
Zakaria wasn’t even on the bench on Saturday as Chelsea beat Wolves 3-0.
Fabrizio Romano now reports that there will be discussions ‘soon’ about Zakaria’s Chelsea future, with a return to Juventus seemingly at least a possibility.
If that is the case, maybe Liverpool should be looking into reviving that move for Zakaria.
Zakaria was outstanding for Borussia Monchengladbach, shining as a box-to-box or holding midfielder with plenty of energy whilst being branded ‘very complete’ by boss Marco Rose.
Liverpool are lacking that energy in midfield at the moment and at 25, he can bring a longer-term solution if the Reds go that way.
Zakaria’s style just seems to fit Liverpool much better that Arthur’s, and you can understand the idea of adding Zakaria as competition for Fabinho given his huge frame.
We know that Bellingham is the focus for next summer but with James Milner, Thiago and Jordan Henderson all into their 30’s and both Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain out of contract in 2023, Liverpool may need to rebuild their midfield ranks.
Buying low on Zakaria in 2023 could be ideal for Liverpool and if Chelsea don’t want him, that route to Anfield should be back on offer in a potential bargain move.
