Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has told the Anfield club’s website that he believes Mikel Arteta is guiding Arsenal in the right direction at the moment. He has applauded the Gunners board for backing the Spaniard.

Arsenal play host to Liverpool in what is a crucial encounter between the two sides at The Emirates on Wednesday night. Manchester City’s draw against Crystal Palace means Liverpool can close the gap with a victory.

Liverpool come into the game having won their last eight Premier League matches – but, that run of fixtures has been tough. Arsenal are certainly the best they will have faced in the league since Chelsea on January 2.

Van Dijk is fully aware that his side will have to be at their best to stop the steam train that is Arsenal, in North London. He applauded the work £96k-a-week (GOAL) Arteta has done, and the Gunners board for backing him.

“A fantastic club. Arteta is doing a fantastic job. He has the confidence from their board. They are definitely building towards something good. They have a clear philosophy and identity. It’s never easy, especially down there.”

Van Dijk on Arteta, Arsenal: Can Liverpool secure win in title race?

While the pressure is on Liverpool to secure a result, a win, and reduce the gap on Manchester City – Arsenal are not without pressure themselves. They come into the game after five straight wins, and look good for fourth.

But Manchester United beat Tottenham on Saturday and Ralf Rangnick’s side certainly have the fire power to elbow Arsenal side. The Gunners need this form to continue. Everything to play for at the Emirates, then.
