Liverpool are set to sign Darwin Nunez but there could be one slight hang-up as the Reds decide how long his contract will be at Anfield.

The Reds are likely to sell Sadio Mane this summer and that means bringing in another attacker.

The signing of Luis Diaz from Porto in January worked perfectly and Liverpool could now go back into the Portuguese market.

Benfica striker Nunez has emerged as Liverpool’s top target for this summer and a deal now appears to be very close.

Reports from Record last week suggested that Liverpool had put an offer of around €100million (£85million) on the table for Nunez.

Nunez was then left out of the Uruguay squad to face Panama on Saturday ahead of completing his move to Anfield.

Fabrizio Romano reported for The Guardian that a verbal agreement was in place on Saturday and that Nunez would sign a five-year deal with Liverpool.

Yet in the early hours of Sunday morning, Romano took to Twitter to claim that the final detail to be sorted is Nunez’s contract length.

Romano now thinks Liverpool could make it a six-year deal all the way up until 2028 as they home in Nunez’s signature.

Romano added that Nunez is flying to Spain and then on to England to finish up his switch to Liverpool.

The 22-year-old was simply outrageous this past season, racking up 34 goals and four assists in 41 games for Benfica.

Nunez even scored twice against Liverpool in the Champions League and left Virgil van Dijk comparing him to Erling Haaland.

A physical striker who can also play out wide, Nunez looks set to become Liverpool’s latest attacking star.

That means Mane heading out of the exit door but if Nunez can live up to his potential, Liverpool will have themselves a brand new star.
