Liverpool have been matched up with Benfica in the Champions League – and that means facing off against their transfer target Darwin Nunez.

The Reds edged past Inter Milan with a 2-1 aggregate win. Benfica weren’t exactly favourites against Ajax but managed to advance past the Dutch side.

On Friday, the draw for the last eight was made and Liverpool were matched up with Benfica.

Many will expect Liverpool to coast past Benfica, but the Portuguese side can pose a major threat to Jurgen Klopp’s Champions League hopes.

Benfica have some quality players in their ranks and nobody stands out more than star attacker Darwin Nunez.

Nunez scored the winning goal against Ajax in midweek, sending a header into the net as Benfica advanced.

Nunez’s record this season is hugely impressive; 33 games played across all competitions and 26 goals scored, with two assists too.

The Uruguayan hitman appears to have the world at his feet at the age of just 22, and these games against Liverpool could be absolutely vital.

The Daily Star reported back in October that Liverpool were interested in signing Nunez.

Sport Witness have since quoted O Jogo as saying that Liverpool are ready to make their move for Nunez this summer.

90Min add that scouts around the Premier League believe that Nunez could be another Luis Diaz.

Diaz has excelled with Liverpool since joining from Porto in January, and there is a belief that Nunez can do the same upon trading Portugal for England.

Nunez now gets the biggest audition against the Reds.

Under the lights at Anfield, Nunez will be able to go up against arguably the top defender in the world in Virgil van Dijk.

Nunez will have to lead the line in front of a great Liverpool crowd whilst tussling with Van Dijk in a somewhat daunting battle.

If Nunez can shine against Van Dijk, Liverpool may just have found yet another exciting attacker to bring to Anfield.
