Liverpool are set to sign big-money star with ‘winner’s mentality’ as director reflects on deal

Liverpool are signing Darwin Nunez – and the man who signed him for Almeria believes the striker has a ‘winner’s mentality’.

The Reds are preparing to lose Sadio Mane this summer with the attacker angling for a move to Bayern Munich.

Luis Diaz came in during the January transfer window but Mane’s emergence as a striker means Liverpool need another option.

Diogo Jota can play there too but Liverpool are going big with their plans to replace Mane.

Benfica have confirmed that they are selling star striker Darwin Nunez to Liverpool in a deal worth around €100million (£85million).

Liverpool quickly made Nunez their top target to replace Mane and who can blame them.

The Uruguayan hitman scored 34 times in 41 games for Benfica last season, including two against Liverpool in the Champions League.

Nunez proved himself in front of Jurgen Klopp and even had Virgil van Dijk comparing him to Erling Haaland.

Add in that Nunez has even played on the left wing and his versatility would be exactly what Liverpool want.

Nunez is only 22 and will need to round out his game in the coming years but the Reds are paying for potential.

The hope will be that Nunez becomes another Uruguayan hero at Anfield, following in the footsteps of Luis Suarez.

It’s only two years since Benfica signed Nunez from Spanish second-tier side Almeria with their gamble certainly paying dividends.

Almeria sporting director Joao Goncalves has now told O Jogo that he told Benfica chief Rui Costa that he would certainly make his money back on Nunez; instead, he’s making huge profit.

Goncalves added that he thinks Nunez is humble but has a ‘winner’s mentality’, something Jurgen Klopp will absolutely love, whilst predicting that he won’t have any problems adjusting to life in the Premier League.

“I told Rui Costa that he was going to recoup the investment in Darwin,” said Goncalves. “Darwin is humble, has talent, a winner’s mentality and a great capacity for work. He won’t have any problems adapting,” he added.
