Darwin Nunez scored for Liverpool but was ‘really angry’ with himself at half time according to teammate Andrew Robertson.

The Reds headed off to Amsterdam to face Ajax on Wednesday night with Jurgen Klopp desperate for a win.

It looked like Liverpool were fully back on track after wins over Rangers, Manchester City and West Ham United.

Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest was a major blow though and with the injury list piling up, Liverpool had to respond against Ajax.

Darwin Nunez scored for Liverpool

It proved to be an emphatic response from Liverpool but only after riding their luck a little in the first half.

Mohamed Salah ended up putting Liverpool ahead before Darwin Nunez headed in the second.

Harvey Elliott fired in number three and Liverpool were able to celebrate a big win that secured their passage into the last 16 of the Champions League.

Nunez will be delighted with his goal, a smart header in off the post from an Andrew Robertson corner.

It only came after a frankly bizarre miss from Nunez though.

The Uruguayan was presented with an empty net in the first half as Roberto Firmino unselfishly squared the ball for what looked like an easy goal.

Nunez contrived to hit the post though, missing the easy chance but scoring the more difficult one.

That kind of sums up Nunez at this stage in his development; raw, unpredictable, capable of going from the sublime to the ridiculous.

Four goals in his last four starts is pretty impressive stuff though and Nunez looks to be making a big impact.

The win over Ajax could have been a two-goal display for Nunez though and he really wasn’t happy.

Left back Robertson told BT Sport after the final whistle that Nunez was actually ‘really angry’ with himself at half time having missed that golden chance.

Robertson added that he promised Nunez there would be another chance to score, but isn’t sure whether the Uruguayan understood him.

“Darwin was in at half time really angry at himself, disappointing in himself for missing that chance,” said Robertson. “I sat next to him in the changing room, I don’t know if he understood a word I said but I said ‘I’ll put a cross on your head and you’ll score no problem’, so maybe we need to say that more often,” he added.
