Speaking on The Done Deal Show, Ben Jacobs has been discussing Liverpool’s summer transfer budget amid claims from Di Marzio that they could spend £250m revamping their squad before next season.

Liverpool have plenty to do in the transfer market next summer. Their midfield needs a complete overhaul, while the spine of their squad continues to age.

Of course, big change means big spending at a club like Liverpool, and, interestingly, according to Jacobs, a £250m spend this summer isn’t impossible.

However, he did add the caveat that a huge spend this summer would have knock-on effects going forward as the FFP cycle would take this spend into account for years to come.

Liverpool could spend big

The reporter shared what he knows on this matter.

“Well I think the answer to that question isn’t clear because every Premier League club could spend 500 or 600 million in any given window and be within FFP. It’s not about one window it’s about projecting the spend that you’ll need across a cycle in FFP, which is multiple windows,” Jacobs said.

“Yes, Liverpool could spend that £250m, but it’s all about what would be left for other windows in Financial Fair Play.”

“It’s not about what Liverpool’s maximum is in any given window, it’s about how they ratio their maximum across multiple windows in an FFP cycle, and if they choose to spend big in one window it effects other transfer windows.”

Now is the time

If ever there was a time for Liverpool to go out and splurge on transfers, this is it.

Julian Ward is leaving, the team are in a state of despair, major reinforcements are needed and the money is there to do it.

Of course, this may all depend on whether or not FSG actually manage to find the minority investment they’re looking for in the coming months, but it’s fair to say that this could be a very interesting summer for Liverpool.
