Speculation is mounting that Liverpool want to sign Marco Asensio of Real Madrid.

It was reported in midweek that Asensio – whose contract at Real Madrid expires in the summer of 2023 – is very much on Liverpool’s radar.

According to Eduardo Inda, speaking to Super Deporte, the Anfield outfit have already made an offer to sign the 26-year-old on a pre-contract agreement next January.

And if Jurgen Klopp can sign this player for nothing, it’s a massive bargain.

That’s because according to Sport, Asensio has a £587 million release clause in the Spanish capital.

Say what you like about his current form, but that sort of figure reflects the fact that Real, at one point, thought extremely high of the player.

Seven goals in 21 Liga outings this season isn’t a bad return but, by the same token, it probably isn’t sufficient for an attacking player for a club like Los Blancos.

And the player himself – according to Sport – has decided that he won’t be staying in Madrid unless he’s given a major salary bump, which seems unlikely.

Liverpool could benefit enormously from Asensio because not only is he only 26, but Klopp is an immense man-manager and could potentially take the Spaniard’s game to a new level entirely.

Plus, he operates in a similar role as Mohamed Salah and with the Egyptian’s future also being in considerable doubt, Liverpool would do well to start thinking about replacing the 29-year-old.

Asensio isn’t good enough to replace Salah, even with Klopp potentially elevating his performances, but the Reds still do need additional wide options and for a free, well the Merseysiders can’t go wrong.
