Liverpool and Everton have been the biggest of rivals for over 100 years, and unfortunately for the Toffees, this rivalry has been rather one-sided in recent years.
Indeed, while the Reds have swept up all sorts of silverware and won almost every derby meeting, Everton have faltered, failing to win a single trophy in the past 25 years and even almost getting relegated last year.
The difference between these two teams on the pitch is there for all to see at the moment, and sadly for the Blue half of Merseyside, there’s also a stark contrast between these two sides in terms of recruitment as well.
Indeed, while Everton have spent massive money on underperforming stars, Liverpool have dug out bargain after bargain, uncovering gems such as Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota and most recently Luis Diaz.

However, things could have gone rather differently with Diaz.
Cast your mind back 12 months, Everton were actually on the brink of signing Diaz, but due to James Rodriguez’s wage demands, a planned swap deal collapsed at the eleventh hour.
Liverpool would eventually go on to snatch Diaz from under their rivals’ noses, and, as we all know, that’s proven to be one of the best signings in modern memory.
Everton may live to regret this situation for years to come, and unfortunately for the Toffees, they could be about to be handed another transfer blow by Liverpool.
According to Jornal de Noticias, Liverpool are now very interested in Sporting CP’s Matheus Nunes, and these reports come just weeks after it was reported that Everton wanted to sign Nunes if the Peter Kenyon-led takeover went through.
Unfortunately, much like the Diaz deal last year, the move to Everton now seems to be off as the Kenyon takeover talks have been put on the backburner, and now, Liverpool could strike.
The parallels between Nunes and Diaz are there for all to see. Two Portuguese League stars who have been courted by both Merseyside clubs, and there is reason to believe that Nunes could become a star at Anfield in the same way the Colombian has.
If Pep Guardiola is describing you as ‘one of the best players in the world’ you have to be a special talent, and if Liverpool land Nunes, he could be a star.
The Reds could be about to hand Everton another real transfer blow.
