Cast your mind back to 2019, and you’ll remember that RB Salzburg had one of the best young squads in Europe.
The likes of Erling Haaland, Patson Daka, Dominik Szoboszlai and Karim Adeyemi were all plying their trade in Austria at the time, but somehow, a number of these players managed to fly slightly under the radar.
However, Liverpool had, depending on how you look at it, the fortune, or misfortune, of playing against Salzburg in that season’s Champions League and they got a first-hand look at how talented some of these players were.
Understandably, Liverpool were impressed by Salzburg and they decided to sign one of their players, but rather than bringing Haaland, Szoboszlai, Daka or Adeyemi to Anfield, they opted to sign Takumi Minamino.
Now, we’re not saying that Minamino is a bad player, but it has to be said that, in hindsight, he’s perhaps the most underwhelming attacker Liverpool could have signed from that incredible young core.
Haaland, and Szoboszlai now star in the Bundesliga, Adeyemi is still ripping it up in Austria, while Daka has enjoyed a very promising debut season at Leicester City.

It’s fair to say that Liverpool went for the wrong Salzburg attacker when signing Minamino. After all, they were apparently open to selling him in January, but they may be about to right that wrong.
Indeed, the Reds are now apparently looking at 18-year-old striker Benjamin Sesko, and that’s signing from Salzburg would be much more like it.
Sesko may have only scored three league goals for the Austrian outfit this season, but at the age of just 18, the sky is seemingly the limit for the Slovenian.
Even though he stands at 6 ft 4, he’s been labelled as the ‘mini Haaland’, while he’s also been described as ‘one of the fastest forwards in the world’.
This level of size and speed is exciting, and when you factor in that he netted 21 league goals while out on loan last season as a 17-year-old, you can see just how exciting this young player is.
Liverpool may have messed up by picking Minamino ahead of Salzburg’s other talented strikers back in January 2020, but Sesko looks like he could be yet another gem from the Austrian champions.
