Raphael Honigstein – who wrote a book on Reds boss Jurgen Klopp in 2017 – also thinks Liverpool are beginning to build an aura of near-invincibility.
Esteemed German football journalist Raphael Honigstein thinks the current Liverpool side is incredibly similar in style to Borussia Dortmund’s class of 2011 and 2012.
Jurgen Klopp, who led the Bundesliga side to the title those years, is now in charge at Anfield and has moulded a team which currently sits seven points clear at the top of the Premier League table.
In Liverpool’s last game, they were expected to be given a stern test by Unai Emery’s Arsenal, but the outcome was a 5-1 win for Klopp’s charges, testament to their serious title credentials.
Out of their 20 league games so far, the Reds have won 17 and drawn three, conceding just eight goals in that run, and boast several world-class players which have been shaped into a cohesive team by Klopp.
Speaking about Liverpool on Sky Sports show Sunday Supplement, Honigstein – who wrote a book on their manager called “Klopp: Bring the Noise” in 2017 – not only compared them to the great Schwarzgelben side of the early 2010s, but also said they are gaining an aura of near-invincibility as opponents may fear they can’t beat them.
“If you put these guys in yellow shirts, you could mistake them for the Dortmund side (which won the titles),” said Honigstein.
“There’s a belief, not only in Liverpool, but in the opposition that they can’t beat this side, or at least it’s going to be really, really tough. That in itself is worth a few points – that kind of aura. That sense of ‘we are the team to beat’. The longer they go unbeaten, the more it’s going to increase the trepidation of teams going to Anfield.”
