Liverpool want Cody Gakpo and the PSV Eindhoven winger opened the door to Pep Lijnders’ dream move last week.

The World Cup is now upon us and many have made their predictions for the tournament in Qatar.

Brazil and Argentina are among the top picks to win the World Cup and there are many names in the mix to be top goalscorer.

Lautaro Martinez is a favourite but some are backing Netherlands star Cody Gakpo to shine after a superb start to the season with PSV Eindhoven.

Gakpo has been simply ridiculous for PSV, racking up 13 goals and 17 assists in 24 appearances for PSV.

Capable of playing out wide, up front or behind a striker, Gakpo has proven himself to be a versatile attacking threat – just what Liverpool are seeking.

The 23-year-old seems ready to announce himself on the world stage and a 2023 transfer just seems absolutely inevitable now.

Gakpo is already on the radar of Europe’s biggest clubs and Liverpool seem to be a keen suitor.

Dean Jones has told Give Me Sport that Liverpool have been scouting Gakpo closely ahead of potentially launching a move for Gakpo.

Dutch pundit Hans Kraay Jr has recently claimed that Liverpool coach Pep Lijnders personally told him that Gakpo is the ‘missing link’ that Liverpool really need.

Gakpo has since name-checked Liverpool whilst naming the major clubs in Europe that it would be an ‘honour’ to play for when he leaves PSV.

This is a public opening of the door from Gakpo, giving Liverpool all the encouragement they need to go and strike a deal.

Sure, Gakpo named other clubs – Real Madrid, Barcelona and more – but he did specifically say Liverpool just as the Reds look into a deal.

Lijnders seemingly believes that Gakpo is the dream signing and if Liverpool don’t act now after those comments then they will miss out on what looks like a very exciting signing.

Gakpo looks set to start for the Netherlands against Senegal on Monday afternoon and Liverpool will surely be watching with intent.

If Gakpo shines at the World Cup, Liverpool will surely feel that the time is right to make Lijnders’ dream a reality whilst giving Jurgen Klopp another potent attacking threat moving forward.
