Liverpool are in advanced talks to sign PSV Eindhoven attacker Cody Gakpo as they look to beat Manchester United to his signature.

That’s according to Paul Joyce of The Times, one of the top reporters when it comes to Liverpool news.

It’s stated that Liverpool have made their move to sign Gakpo in an effort to overtake United in the race for Gakpo.

It was only on Christmas Day that TEAMtalk reported that Manchester United fully expect to sign Gakpo in January.

Yet it now looks like Liverpool have repeated last January’s trick, when they hijacked Tottenham Hotspur for Luis Diaz.

The report claims that negotiations have reached an advanced stage over the last 48 hours and a deal worth up to £50million is in the pipeline.

PSV didn’t really want to sell Gakpo in January but have now accepted his departure and look set to sell to Liverpool.

Gakpo to Liverpool would be an incredible heist

Who saw this coming?

For weeks now, it has looked like Gakpo will finally head to Manchester United after months of chasing his signature.

Yet Liverpool showed with that Diaz deal that they can operate very quietly and sneak into transfer races.

Gakpo now looks more likely to head to Anfield in a deal that will delight Virgil van Dijk.

Gakpo and Van Dijk play for the Netherlands together and could now join forces at Liverpool.

Van Dijk even called Gakpo a ‘great boy’ and ‘very talented’ during the World Cup, possibly having a word in his ear to make the move to Anfield.

Gakpo has been sensational this season, bagging 13 goals and 17 assists in 24 appearances for PSV.

Capable of playing out wide or up front, Gakpo can now give Liverpool a versatile attacking threat – and beating bitter rivals United to his signature makes it even sweeter.
