The Liverpool prospect was part of Jurgen Klopp’s pre-season plans, can he make a competitive appearance this season?

Liverpool U23s coach Neil Critchley thinks Rhian Brewster needs a run of regular games to get back to full fitness after a debilitating injury, The Liverpool Echo report.

Brewster missed over a year of training and matches after being stretchered off in an U23s game against Manchester City January 2018.

Working hard to rehabilitate, the 19-year-old was included as part of Jurgen Klopp’s plans during pre-season. He impressed, scoring four goals in friendly competition.

Although continuing to train with the senior squad, it now seems likely he will remain playing for the club’s development side while he gets back to full match sharpness.

As quoted by The Liverpool Echo, Critchley explained: “Rhian needs to build up volume of football. He’s had a good pre-season where he has stayed fit and has managed some minutes for the first team and scored a couple of goals for them.

“He just has to keep playing games. If he does that, I’m sure at some point his fitness and general all-round game, co-ordination, his agility, his touch, his awareness, that will come back.”

Klopp is clearly a fan of the prospect so he could be in line to make his competitive debut once he gets that ‘volume of football’ under his belt with the U23s.

The closest he’s come to making his debut so has been featuring on the bench in the UEFA Champions League semi-final and final, as well as a Premier League match against Crystal Palace.

With Liverpool choosing not to invest heavily into their first-team options, players like Brewster have a massive opportunity over the next 12 months to make an impact in the first-team squad.

The attacking front three is the Reds’ strongest area of the team so Brewster has a tough task ahead of him, but this summer he has already shown he will fearlessly take his opportunities if they are given to him by Klopp.
