Liverpool are looking to win their sixth European Cup in Madrid on Saturday.

Loris Karius of Liverpool looks on during the UEFA Champions League final between Real Madrid and Liverpool on May 26, 2018 in Kiev, Ukraine.

Liverpool goalkeeping coach John Achterberg spoke exclusively to the Times, and shared the text message that Loris Karius sent both himself and Jurgen Klopp after the Reds reached the Champions League final.

The German was a much-maligned figure at Anfield, with a series of high-profile errors costing Klopp’s side last season – none more significant than his lapses of concentration in the Champions League final against Real Madrid.

Karius has spent this season on loan at Besiktas, and Liverpool have thrived in his absence after signing Alisson Becker from Roma last summer for around £66.8m according to BBC Sport.

Despite the fact that he was far from popular amongst Reds fans, the German still seems to have Liverpool in his heart, according to John Achterberg.

The Reds goalkeeping coach shared with the Times what Karius told Klopp via text after the Merseyside outfit beat Barcelona over two legs in the Champions League semi-finals:

“Loris texted Jurgen and myself when we reached the final. He said he was happy for us and hopes we now win. I think that says a lot about him.”

Liverpool are favourites to beat Tottenham, but they will have to be on their very best form if they are to leave Madrid victorious.

Karius, meanwhile, will still be hanging on to his faint hopes that he still has a future at Anfield.
