Liverpool’s Tony Gallacher featured for the under-23s last night for the first time.
New Liverpool signing Tony Gallacher made his debut for the under-23s last night against Tottenham.
The Reds lost 1-0 in a game which saw Liverpool reduced to nine men as Adam Lallana and George Johnston were sent off.
Gallacher was one of two Liverpool signings in January, arriving for a six-figure fee from Scottish side Falkirk.
He was played out of his usual position and while coach Neil Critchley was not exactly glowing about his performance, he insisted he has full faith the young Scot will kick on.
He told Liverpool’s official website: “It was extremely difficult for him to come in tonight. He normally plays left-back; we played him on the left side of a back three and it’s not easy.
“We don’t play a defensive back three, we play an attacking back three where they have to defend big spaces, they press forward and he had to deal with space behind him.
“During the game he settled into it and got better. He’ll take time to adapt to how we play – and he’ll get better.”
Gallacher is currently hoping to establish himself as Liverpool’s third choice left-back, behind Alberto Moreno and Andrew Robertson.
Last night’s experience as part of a back three was part of an education for him, and Gallacher will be finding everything completely new at Liverpool.
A first team debut could be a couple of years away for the 18-year-old, but there will be better nights for the under-23s for him ahead.
