PSV Eindhoven confirmed on Boxing Day that the club have reached an agreement with Liverpool for the transfer of Cody Gakpo – and Liverpool coach John Achterberg has now commented “welcome to the club” on the his Instagram.
Gakpo, 23, has had a hand in 30 goals for PSV in 24 appearances this season – having come so close to a move to the Premier League in the summer. At the World Cup in Qatar, he took his form to a new level, starring for his country.
Now, the lofty, versatile star is off to Anfield. PSV confirmed an agreement had been met between the two sides. A deal is expected to materialise sooner rather than later. The Times say it is an initial £37m, which could rise to £44m.
With a deal pretty-much nailed on after PSV’s confirmation and the likelihood that Gakpo accepts a move from PSV to Anfield – Achterberg has gone one step further. Gakpo posted a picture on Christmas Eve, alongside his partner.
But goalkeeping coach Achterberg commented on the post on Boxing Day evening, following Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Aston Villa. He said “welcome to the club” to Gakpo – signalling a deal is done and he will be a Reds player.

Achterberg has hardly jumped the gun. A deal is expected to materialise in hours, rather than days – especially after PSV had confirmed Liverpool’s move. The Reds have blown numerous clubs out of the water to land the attacker.
Surpassing the likes of Real Madrid, Manchester United and other big clubs – the news of Gakpo’s arrival at Anfield surprised many. Including, hardcore Liverpool fan and ex-Anfield left-back Jose Enrique. A great bit of business.
But one that was needed, too. The Reds have Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota on the sidelines for a considerable amount of time. Darwin Nunez is not yet proving fluent, while Roberto Firmino’s deal ends in June. Gakpo was necessary.
