Liverpool Under-23 assistant coach Gary O’Neil said on talkSPORT (12:39pm, December 21, 2020) that Gareth Bale could still turn on the style for Tottenham Hotspur.

Bale returned to Tottenham on loan from Spanish and European giants Real Madrid in the summer of 2020.

Much was expected of the Wales international winger when he returned to Spurs, but the 31-year-old has failed to make a huge impact.

The winger was carrying an injury when he moved to Spurs, and he has yet to establish himself as a regular in head coach Jose Mourinho’s starting lineup.

According to WhoScored, Bale has made one start and three substitute appearances in the Premier League and has played in six Europa League games for Spurs.

O’Neil said about Bale on talkSPORT (12:39pm, December 21, 2020): “I think the risk of the signing is sort of showing at the minute. I think it’s a difficult one. I still think there’s a player in there. He is only 31. He is by no means over the hill.”

Tottenham legend Glenn Hoddle told The London Evening Standard about Bale: “Gareth is not going to be running past four or five players like he used to but I think he can create. He has a good pass on him and with more time on the pitch he will get a good link with Harry Kane and Heung min-Son.

“One of the things Tottenham are lacking is creativity. There is not that creative spark. Gareth Bale coming back would be sensational. But he has more to show.”

Staying positive

Bale needs a run of games to get back to his best, and perhaps the winger will get that soon.

Spurs are doing well without the Wales international playing regularly, and although the former Southampton man is far from his best at the moment, he remains a valuable option for Mourinho.

Tottenham have emerged as genuine challengers for the Premier League title and have also progressed to the knockout rounds of the Europa League.
