According to a report from Spanish media outlet Don Balon, Manchester United are lining up a summer swoop for Real Madrid ace Marco Asensio, but Liverpool cannot afford to let their bitter rivals beat them to the Spaniard’s signature.

The 22-year-old is one of the most exciting young talents in world football, and has really impressed for Los Blancos since joining the club in 2014, chalking up 21 goals and 10 assists in 91 appearances in all competitions.

Asensio signed a new contract with Madrid in September last year that included a €500 million (£438 million release clause), according to the Mirror, but with his opportunities of regular first-team action at the Santiago Bernabeu proving to be hard to come by, he could attempt to force through an exit for a reduced fee.

Liverpool are in need of another attacker to provide more competition for their famous front three, and the Spain international would be an excellent addition to their squad.

With Don Balon reporting that Manchester United are keen on signing him, though, the Merseyside outfit need to act fast.

Jürgen Klopp is currently overseeing an incredibly exciting project at Anfield, and that could be enough to tempt Asensio into joining them over the Red Devils.

And if Liverpool can secure a deal for the Spaniard for substantially less than his £438 million release clause, they would surely be in a great position to usurp their bitter rivals this season.
