Liverpool take on Manchester United at Anfield on Monday evening.

Graeme Souness has told Sky Sports that Liverpool would lay down a marker by beating Manchester United on Monday.

The Reds host their fierce rivals at Anfield on Monday evening in a highly anticipated meeting between the two sides.

The two are top four rivals once again this season after missing out on a Champions League place last season.

Liverpool are currently fourth in the table after an impressive start while United sit seventh, three points behind Jurgen Klopp’s team.

The clash on Monday evening will be a huge indication of not only either teams’ top four credentials but also their ability to potentially challenge for the title.

And Souness has told Sky Sports that the home side coming out victorious would be them laying down a marker.

“Liverpool have not won the league now for 20-plus years and they would love to put a marker down. If they do, I think it will say they have a real chance this year,” he said.

“I would be happy as a Liverpool supporter with top four. Right now, if you are a Liverpool supporter they are maybe thinking even more than top four.”

The latest meeting between these two sides will certainly make for fascinating viewing this time around.

A win for the Reds will see them go level on points with leaders Manchester City and Arsenal at the top of the table.

Jose Mourinho’s team, meanwhile, simply need a win just to keep up, with them already six points off first place.
