Liverpool are in the market for a midfielder this summer, but it’s a very specific type of player they’re looking for.

Fabrizio Romano has outlined exactly what Liverpool want in the midfield. They want a player with a similar profile to Diogo Jota, someone, young, talented and ready to fight for a place in the team.

“Liverpool are looking for a different player. They want to do something like they did for Diogo Jota. To find this kind of player, a young one, ready to fight for a place with good talent,” Romano said when discussing Liverpool’s midfielder hunt.

Finding a young talented midfielder is obviously easier said than done, but if recent reports are to be believed, the Reds may already be eyeing one up.

Indeed, there have been plenty of rumours about Liverpool wanting Sander Berge from Sheffield United, and with Voetbal24 claiming that Jurgen Klopp is ‘absolutely convinced’ by his talents earlier this week, it seems as though a deal could be on the cards.

Berge ticks all the boxes mentioned by Romano. At 23 years old he’s very young. He’s certainly a talented footballer, Klopp is convinced of that, and he’s also drawn interest from the likes of Chelsea and Arsenal in the past. If he came in, he’d certainly be ready to fight for a place in the first-team, with the manager reportedly believing he’s ‘ideal’ for the Reds’ midfield.

Yes, he’s endured a nightmare season with Sheffield United, but Liverpool fans ought to know better than anyone that a relegated player isn’t necessarily a bad one, just look at Andy Robertson who went down with Hull before signing for the Reds.

Berge is certainly in that Jota mould, he’s a talented young player who’s never been given a chance at the very top level, and with Liverpool looking for a player with that profile, it seems as though this deal would make a lot of sense.
