Former Brentford ace Sam Sodje is pinching himself ahead of this weekend’s Premier League clash with a Liverpool team boasting Mo Salah and Sadio Mane, speaking to All Nigeria Soccer.
When the Bees were mending their broken hearts following failure to escape League One in 2013 – and that infamous Marcello Trotta penalty miss – they wouldn’t have imagined they’d be hosting the six-time European champions at their shiny new 17,000-capacity stadium less than a decade later.
Liverpool’s Saturday night trip to west London is an indication how far this club has travelled in such a short space of time, although you won’t find many Brentford players letting emotion get the better of them.
The Bees have been solid, steady and surprisingly efficient during a super start to the season.
And, as Arsenal and Wolves will tell you, a side containing the likes of Bryan Mbeumo, Ethan Pinnock and the outstanding Ivan Toney should never be underestimated.
Then again, Liverpool look like a force to be reckoned with themselves having won all but one of their six matches in 2021/22.
Brentford meeting Liverpool is a ‘dream come true’
“I am so happy, so delighted talking about Brentford in the same sentence as Liverpool. It’s a dream come true,” beams Sodje, who played 83 games for the London club between 2004 and 2006.
“Every player in Liverpool is a world-class player with superstars like Salah and Mane. All the players are dangerous, from the right-back to the left-back.
“I know with the mentality of Brentford now, they aren’t scared of any team. Brentford will face Liverpool and do their best – hopefully they can get a result.”
With five goals to his name already, the irrepressible Salah will be desperate to add to his tally this weekend. But Reds fans beware – Brentford will be no pushovers.
