Jurgen Klopp has revealed to BBC Sport that Joe Gomez told him he simply couldn’t do anything about the penalty he gave away yesterday.

Gomez was guilty of conceding a harsh spot kick against Manchester City, after he was deemed to have handled the ball by VAR.

Gomez appeared to be trying to get his arms out of the way of the cross, but was not quite able to, and upon review the penalty was given.

Kevin de Bruyne actually missed the chance to score from 12 yards, but the decision to award the penalty was still very controversial.

And Klopp kept his cool after the game, simply saying that Gomez protested his innocence to him.

“I haven’t seen it yet, but Joe said, “I cant do anything,” Klopp revealed.

The penalty decision has just heaped further scrutiny on the new handball law, which has created great controversy this season.

The Premier League is set for a record number of penalties to be given this term, and the changes to the law have been extremely unpopular.

In the end, Liverpool and City played out a 1-1 draw – which both sides seemed content enough with at full-time.
