The Liverpool chief was in full support of the Tottenham Hotspur supremo’s comments today.
Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp jumped to the defence of Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino during his pre-match press conference today, highlighting how important a top four finish is from a financial perspective, as quoted by the London Evening Standard.
The Spurs boss suggested on Sunday that finishing inside the top four is just as important as winning a trophy, and he claimed that his team do not need to do the latter in order to reach the so-called ‘next level’.
Tottenham fans are desperate for their side to win a trophy, however, having last seen them do just that 11 years ago.
The Lilywhites crashed out of both domestic cups in the space of four days last week, though, and with nine points separating them and league leaders Liverpool, the Champions League seems to be their only realistic chance to win a trophy this season.
Klopp offered words of support for Pochettino, however, when speaking to reporters today, suggesting that the guaranteed money earned from a top four finish is something that cannot be underestimated, as quoted by the London Evening Standard:
“I know that people probably didn’t like what Poch said, but it’s so easy from the outside looking in. From a club point of view, the best competition to win is the Premier League because then you are in the top four and you won a big thing. You want to win the other competitions but that doesn’t guarantee you the money for the next year. That’s why top four is so important.”
If Tottenham are to have any chance of winning the Premier League title, they can ill-afford to drop too many more points, but as things stand, it seems as though their wait for a trophy will go on for another year at least.
